*Description:* For trainees in the life sciences, few goals are as important as achieving first-author publication. Authorship is “the coin of the realm” in science. Ideally, we all agree that authorship confers credit and also generates accountability. The normative importance of both of these concepts for the research enterprise cannot be understated, and so it behooves us to reflect on how assignment of authorship should proceed responsibly.
