The Business of Science for Postdocs Mini Bootcamp
The Office is offering a three-part series on The Business of Science for Postdocs facilitated by the team at SciPhD. The series is co-sponsored with Boston Children's Hospital Office of Fellowship Training and The FAS Office of Postdoctoral Affairs
The three workshops are to be taken as a series as each session builds on the skills developed in the earlier workshops. The workshops begin at 2:00pm each day.
OPF Registration is limited to 33 HMS/HSDM affiliated postdocs, registration is required.
The bootcamp makes academic scientists “business-ready” for professional positions, whether in academia, government, or industry. SciPhD’s experiential “learn by doing” methodology provides hands-on training for students to experience the essential skills valued and required by professional organizations. Currently, many traditional academic programs, emphasize the scientific/technical skills, with less of a focus on the business and social skills. The SciPhD program raises awareness of these skills, and helps students become more aware of, and improve these skills using hands-on experiences.
Postdocs who complete the three-day series will received access to Flamingo, SciPhD's exclusive career web application that helps you select a career, identify and develop relevant business and social skills, and get your first job
The Business of Science - March 25 - 2:00-4:00pm: Covers kinds of career choices, critical skills valued in organizations (technical, business and social), how to map experiences and accomplishments to job requirements and use that to develop a targeted resume.
Communications - April 1 - 2:00-5:00pm: Includes our four components related to real-world experiences: Technical Literacy, Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence, and Style Flexibility.
Project Management - April 6 - 2:00-5:00pm: Focuses on how project management relates to every day science activities, using planning to anticipate and mitigate risk, using SWOT analysis to maximize likelihood of success, Project Management tools, and translating these skills in the lab.
The workshops begin at 2:00pm each day, first workshop runs for two hours, the final two run for three hours.
Detailed workshop descriptions
About SciPhD: SciPhD provides training for scientists who want to transition from academia to non-academic careers. Various workshops, boot camps and certificate programs are designed to offer resources and hands-on training to identify and develop skills in communication, leadership, negotiation, team building, networking, and project management. Workshops introduce job opportunities in industry, and a critical evaluation of students’ skills, all to translate “operational competencies” to SciPhD’s 23 core competencies, valued by hiring companies. Additionally, a focus on resume and interview preparation, as well as networking helps participants to design an individual career action plan. Numerous universities, medical schools, science academies and societies in the US and abroad have hosted SciPhD training programs.
