Biomedical Science Writing for Non-Native English Speakers

In today’s hectic, busy world, your research advisors only have time to read manuscripts for content; therefore, a grammatically accurate and linguistically appropriate manuscript is your responsibility. For those people who are non-native speakers of English, writing is a difficult skill to master, and writing for journal publication can be a daunting task. This writing workshop for international postdoctoral fellows will focus on English language usage, linguistics and cross-cultural issues involved in Western journal publication. The session will be interactive and participants will leave with an expanded awareness and knowledge of what is expected in journal publication writing. The following topics will be discussed: The Western writing process, brainstorming techniques, and culture; Grammatical conventions; Complex sentence structures; Word Choice; Emphasis; Ambiguity; and Mechanics.

James Gould, PhD, Director, HMS/HSDM Office for Postdoctoral Fellows
Jim Gould joined HMS in June 2011 and is the Director of the HMS/HSDM Office for Postdoctoral Fellows. Prior to heading the Postdoc Office, Jim was finishing his postdoctoral training at the National Cancer Institute-Frederick with Dr. James Phang on the role of the proline cycle in the metabolic regulation of cellular redox and survival in cancer. With an eye for a career in Graduate and Postdoctoral Training and Education, he took on an unpaid internship with the National Cancer Institute’s Office of Training and Education in the Center for Cancer Research. He was Chair of the Steering Committee for the CCR Fellows & Young Investigators Association (NCI’s Postdoc Association) and is a member of the National Postdoctoral Association, ASBMB, AACR, and AAAS. Jim received his BS at Clarion University of Pennsylvania in Biotechnology/Molecular Biology and his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Louisville. His first postdoctoral position was also at the NCI-Frederick with Dr. Michael Dean studying the roles of the Gli transcription factors on therapeutic intervention of the Hedgehog signaling pathway.

Jennifer Leeds, PhD, Director, Antibacterial Discovery, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research
Jennifer got her undergraduate degree in Microbiology from Cornell University in 1991 and her Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology and Immunology with Rod Welch at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1996. Jenn then joined Jon Beckwith's lab, where she studied integral membrane protein assembly and function in bacteria. Jenn left HMS in 2001 to start a career in the pharmaceutical industry, first at Dyax Corp, working on improvements in phage display technology, and then in the Infectious Diseases Area at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research.
