Description: A teaching philosophy statement is a common component of the academic job application process, yet many postdoctoral scholars find it challenging to translate their teaching experiences, values, and approaches into a concise, evidence-based narrative. In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the key elements of an effective teaching philosophy statement and learn strategies for clearly communicating their approach to teaching and student learning.

The workshop will be highly interactive and include small-group discussions, breakout activities, peer review, and opportunities to give and receive constructive feedback. Participants will work collaboratively to identify strengths, clarify ideas, and refine their statements for academic job applications.

Participants are encouraged to bring a draft of their teaching philosophy statement if they have one. Drafts are not required, but attendees who bring a statement will have opportunities to receive peer feedback and begin revising their document during the session.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key components of an effective teaching philosophy statement.
  • Articulate their teaching values, practices, and evidence of student learning.
  • Provide and receive constructive feedback on teaching statements.
  • Develop a plan for revising or drafting a teaching philosophy statement for the academic job search.
