Workshop Description: Being competitive and successful as a professional scientist, regardless of whether in an industry or academic setting requires mastery of scientific, business, and social skills. Running an effective laboratory operation is like running a small business, and can benefit from applying best practices that have been developed by industry. In “Preparing for Professional Careers” we will look at how your scientific/technical skills combined with your business skills and social skills together make up the three identities that define your brand. The same competencies that industry requires in order to be successful are equally important in developing and co-existing in a high-performing team in academic settings as well. We will also learn how to reframe your past experiences using business language valued by hiring managers. We will discuss how to build and leverage your network to develop advocates that can get your targeted resume on the hiring manager’s desk. Finally, we will discuss the interview process itself, and how to prepare so that you demonstrate why you are the best qualified candidate for that job.

Learning Objectives:
• Increased awareness of career opportunities with a PhD
• Understanding the critical behaviors and skills valued by professional organizations
• Express your own experiences using business language businesses value
• Dissect a job ad to identify critical skills valued for that job
• Develop a targeted resume that demonstrates your skills and accomplishments in the context of what the organization values
• How to build and leverage your network to get your targeted resume to the hiring manager
• Prepare for the Behavioral-based interview

*Lunch will be provided for attendees.
