Description: Cutting-edge experimentation inevitably produces new types and/or greater quantities of data, and increasingly involves extensive networks of collaborators. This natural evolution of research is currently accompanied by a growing emphasis on open science, and on resolving instances of irreproducibility. All of these trends entail more robust approaches to data management, and funders and journals are beginning to emphasize curation and data sharing in ways that they previously have not. Regardless of whether these changes are essential or burdensome (or both), data management and data sharing are playing a growing role in scientists’ abilities to fund and publish their research. This course will introduce these topics and discuss how they relate to legal and ethical matters, including intellectual property, the privacy of human research subjects, and the ownership of data.
