Application: The application for this workshop is closed. We plan to offer it again later this year.
Facilitator: Kathy Brenner, Writing Consultant, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
Description: Writing a research manuscript for journal publication is a daunting task, but it is time to make this writing effort a little less so. Come and join us for a full day of writing support, learning, and doing—from lecture to the analysis of IMRaD structure (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections) and language; then on to the boot camp and peer review.
In the morning, we will begin with a presentation completely focused on IMRaD+Abstract instruction, after which IMRaD will come alive with the use of a published article to show how this writing genre is structured and what choice of language supports this format.
After lunch, you will participate in a boot camp session to focus on writing a section of your manuscript. Following the boot camp, you will then move into small peer review groups to obtain feedback on your writing. Towards the end of the workshop, you will return briefly to the boot camp format to revise this section of writing while still fresh in your mind.
*** In order to participate in the peer review groups, you can do one of two things: Either bring FOUR hard copies of a selected paragraph for peer review or email your current boot camp writing to the other members in your group on the day of the event.
Bring your fully charged laptop or tablet, and all the materials you need to achieve your writing goals, and we will provide the food, the space, and some peace and quiet to write efficiently.
Participants should plan to arrive on time and stay for the entire session. Cell phones must be turned off and Internet usage must be restricted to research.
