This hybrid mini course is designed to support postdoctoral scholars as they prepare for faculty position interviews and teaching responsibilities. Through a combination of in-person and Zoom sessions, participants will explore key topics including:
- Understanding the Academic Job Market
- Developing a Values-Based Teaching Philosophy
- Pedagogical Strategies for Student Engagement
- Designing an Effective Teaching Demonstration
The course emphasizes practical application. By the end of the program, attendees will leave with a polished teaching philosophy statement and confidence in presenting an engaging teaching demo.
Session 3: Designing an Effective Teaching Demonstration (Zoom)
Description:
This session focuses on creating a dynamic, student-centered teaching demonstration that meets the expectations of faculty search committees. Participants will learn what a typical teaching demo looks like across different institution types R1 universities, primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs), and medical schools and how to integrate discipline-specific pedagogy such as active learning and inclusive teaching strategies. Through guided activities, attendees will break down essential elements of an effective demo, including learning objectives, engagement strategies, and assessment moments. By the end of the session, participants will begin crafting a 20–30-minute teaching demonstration tailored to their discipline and audience.
