This hybrid mini course is designed to support postdoctoral scholars as they prepare for faculty position interviews and teaching responsibilities. Through a combination of in-person and Zoom sessions, participants will explore key topics including:
- Understanding the Academic Job Market
- Developing a Values-Based Teaching Philosophy
- Pedagogical Strategies for Student Engagement
- Designing an Effective Teaching Demonstration
The course emphasizes practical application. By the end of the program, attendees will leave with a polished teaching philosophy statement and confidence in presenting an engaging teaching demo.
Session 1: Understanding the academic job market (Zoom)
Description:
This session provides postdoctoral scholars with a clear roadmap for navigating the faculty job market. Participants will learn how the search process works, what hiring committees prioritize, and how expectations differ across institution types from research-intensive universities (R1) to primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) and state colleges. Through interactive discussion and self-assessment activities, attendees will begin aligning their strengths with institutional missions and prepare for crafting application materials.
